Warpigs vs Lundgren...?

Postby Shredrik » Fri Feb 05, 2010 9:18 pm

Anyone out there who has tried both and would care to give me a brief review?

I had a Lundgren M6 in my Horizon a while back and was satisfied I guess - they can handle the lower notes really well, but the negative aspect was that it didn't squeal well enough...

Anyway, I'm currently looking for something to replace the bridge mic in my Caparison Dellinger, and I need a pup that's well suited for Drop-A (!) tuning AND can handle squeals.

Neither of these are stocked by nearby shops (for obvious reasons), so therefore a little help would be highly appreciated since I need to order them and may not be able to get a refund if it turns out they suck!? ;)

Cheers!

i can actually highly recommend the BKP painkillers, super tight for low tuning, good harmonics, sound quite dynamic. Judging from clips the M6 is very scooped and compressed. Im sure the painkiller is as tight but very middy and dynamic. no experience with warpigs tho, i hear they are quite similar to the painkiller, just a bit less tight sounding and more output, also have a nasty growl for those br00tal tones.

if you choose warpigs, make sure you get a ceramic bridge magnet. Even so off that description I'd pick a painkiller

well, I want a pup that can handle the really low tones by delivering a thick, heavy sound (like the Lundgren M6) - but also squeal like a pig for some KsE-inspired riffing (which I think the Lundgren was lacking)! ;)

I'm playing through a "Folkesson modified" Peavey 5150 (if anyone outside of Scandinavia knows who that is?)...

But the Painkiller sounds sweet too, could anyone please tell me the biggest differences between them?

Cheers, and sorry for being a pain in the a** with all those questions :P

Hey again all,
thanks for all yer help!

I emailed Bare Knuckles and got a reply from Tim - "without hesitation - Painkiller!" and I'm guessing he knows what he's talking about... ;)

I guess I've known that the PK would better suit my needs all along, but somewhere deep inside I wanted the Warpig to be better since it looks alot cooler?!

Anyways, Painkiller it is for me - so for all of you out there with a similar setup and similar problem, it seems the Painkiller would be the best choice. I'll post again with feedback as soon as I've tried it out :)

Cheers!

you will love the PK, its a sick pickup! and btw, you can get any cover for any pickup with BKP, just tell Tim what case you want it in, you can have it look like the WP.

Awesome, I took your advice and contacted Tim - really nice guy!

So, today I ordered a black "custom" Painkiller with a black Warpig cover and black allen bolts, except in single screw pole design instead of the Warpigs twin pole...

Anyways, hopefully it'll both look and sound amazing, plus add that finishing touch to my new Dellinger, which kicks ass btw!!! ;)

^I'd be very interested to see pics of the result. I've never had or tested a BKP, but what i do know is that I don't like most of their pickups covers. EMG's are so classy 8-)

How many waiting time ?

Fair enough :p

Any upcharge for the custom order or you're still lookin around the 130€ mark?

Don't worry tho, upgrading a guitar for its greater good is always a pleasure, even if it takes time :)

No actually same price - £109 + £8 for shipping it to sweden... pretty much spot on €130 I guess, or 1300 swedish Kronor! :)

btw - I dunno why ppl keep saying the BKP's are expensive, it's the cheapest pickup I ever bought...?! the Lundgren M6 set me back about €180, my old EMG 81 cost €135 and the SD Fullshred about the same. Perhaps pickups are just generally very expensive over here?? :P Crappy fkn country, cold and depressing... decent metal tho I guess ;)

BKPs do seem to be cheaper than Duncans, Dimarzios and EMGs when you're talking retail prices -- especially in the UK and Europe. That said, for Americans and those buying new pickups from the US on ebay, it's super-easy to get those big brands for way under the retail prices (iirc, usually the equivalent of about €50 to €70). It seems that those low prices are so ubiquitous in the US as to be considered the "street" price by Americans, so for them BKPs are a bit more expensive.
